How your guess is scored

Each question is worth up to 100 points. Your score depends on the distance between your guess and the answer’s location. All five questions count equally, for a daily maximum of 500.

The score falls quickly at first, then more gradually as the distance grows. Distances shown after a guess are rounded to the nearest kilometre.

Curious about the exact formula?

Points = round(100 × e−distance in km / 2,500). Scores use the unrounded distance and are rounded to a whole point.

A little colour for every question

The dots in your results and shared score represent your five guesses, in order. Here’s what each one means.

  • 90–99
    GreatYou know your literary world.
  • 50–89
    Getting closeOn the right track.
  • 1–49
    Far afieldA new place to discover.
  • 0
    A world awayEvery guess is a new chance.

On the globe, the blue pin is your guess and the green pin is the answer. Their colours identify the locations, rather than your score.

See where your story ranks

Finish all five questions to join today’s leaderboard. It shows the top 50 readers and your own result, even if you finish outside the top 50. If scores are tied, the earlier finish ranks first.

Guests receive a reader name beginning with “Reader-”. With a connected account, you can choose a name before your first guess. Your email isn’t displayed on the leaderboard.

When does the next round arrive?

A new round starts every day at 00:00 UTC. Everyone plays the same five questions, wherever they are in the world.

Will I lose my progress if I refresh?

Your submitted guesses are saved automatically. Return in the same browser, with its site data intact, to continue today’s round. Clearing your browser’s site data can remove access to an anonymous account.

Do I need an account to play?

You can start playing without signing up. After finishing, “Track stats” lets you connect Google, Apple, or email to save your GeoBooks identity and scores.

Can I share my score without spoiling the answers?

Yes. Use “Share score” on the results screen to share your total and five coloured dots. The answers stay a surprise for everyone else.
